The Floyd Law Firm Announces New Team Member, Attorney Bonnie Loomis

The Floyd Law Firm PC > News > The Floyd Law Firm Announces New Team Member, Attorney Bonnie Loomis

A native South Carolinian, Bonnie Loomis was raised in Mt. Pleasant and currently lives in Murrells Inlet. She attended the University of South Carolina for both undergraduate studies and law school, achieving honors with both degrees. After graduation, she practiced law in Columbia, SC, before relocating to the Murrells Inlet area to be closer to aging family members.

Bonnie’s legal career includes more than three decades of work across all three branches of South Carolina state government: judicial, legislative and administrative. While her legal practice will focus on family law, she brings litigation experience that can be applied to benefit our civil and probate litigation clients. Her depth of state government experience includes regulatory matters – including utility law and Public Service Commission representation – as well as matters before state licensing agencies that oversee liquor sales, professional services, environmental concerns, and healthcare industry licensing.

Lawyer Loomis brings decades of experience and a focus on Family Law to The Floyd Law Firm, and we are excited to welcome her to our team!

Loomis’ pre-law career encompasses work with a residential multi-family housing developer, as well as having managed landlord and tenant matters. She is among a small number of local attorneys who have worked full-time in and around the state legislature as it grappled with adopting the SC Homeowners Association Act – which strengthened her knowledge of concerns regarding the governance and enforcement of the act on both the homeowner association aspect and on the homeowner side of the law.

Bonnie’s background also includes more than two decades of work with non-profit organizations, both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6), and she offers a wealth of knowledge on ethical, accountable non-profit governance. She has advised and represented non-profit boards as well as individual board members.

An area close to Bonnie’s heart, and to which she brings decades of personal experience, is advocacy for individuals with special needs. Her sensitivity stems from her childhood, through a beloved Aunt who had contracted polio as a child which led to lifelong mobility difficulties. Into adulthood, Bonnie grew from, learned with, and advocated for those in her own family with epilepsy, ADHD, and PTSD. She continues to lend her voice to those needing accommodations at schools or workplaces. She also aims to assist those who need help with appealing health insurance claim denials.

When Bonnie was a college freshman in need of a part-time job, she was hired as a Legislative Aide in the SC House of Representatives and spent hundreds of hours becoming familiar with the legislative process. After a brief stint in residential real estate development, she attended law school. Provided with her experience in the Statehouse, she was quickly recruited to join a Columbia law firm’s government affairs practice as a law clerk. The firm, at the time, was among several that were active in an effort to deregulate telephone service in the state – thus Bonnie’s understanding of utility regulation took root.

Bonne Loomis and Family

After Bonnie graduated college, she joined a Columbia law firm practicing insurance defense litigation. After having her first child, she transitioned into a small legal practice that specialized in mortgage foreclosures. In time, she was recruited back to the Statehouse and spent decades working in and around the state capital representing lobbying and government procurement clients. While partnered with a friend, Bonnie learned and helped on family court matters whenever the legislature was not demanding her full focus.

Lawyer Loomis looks forward to meeting and helping new and existing clients with their legal needs. In her spare time, she enjoys the beautiful outdoors with her husband, Chris, and daughter, Anna.
