Welcome to our first installment of A note from Lawyer Loomis, in which Attorney Bonnie Loomis shares insights and tips on a variety of legal topics. Whether you’re facing a legal challenge or simply seeking guidance, her goal is to provide you with valuable information and practical advice.
As I speak with potential clients, a major question they all have is: how much will this cost? My answer never satisfies: it’s hard to say.
Time is the key factor in cost for legal services. Until we get into a matter on your behalf, it’s impossible to know the issues we may encounter or the challenges the other side might present. What is possible, always, is that we want to work within a budget that fits your family and your situation, particularly in today’s challenging economic environment.
For cases that are uncontested (meaning everyone is in agreement), we can bill on a “flat fee basis”. This is because we’ve had a lot of experience and know how much time and effort this matter should take. We can give a straight-forward price, and with that, peace of mind.
For complicated cases, we can’t give a set-price because we don’t know how much time will be needed. This causes clients stress and anxiety but, unfortunately, it’s the reality when we deal with unknowns.
In these cases, we work with clients to schedule routine “check points” for us to reconnect on case status and strategy, review costs to date and discuss anticipated upcoming costs. We also talk through steps the client can take themselves to control costs, such as preparing securely shared documents that provide background that we can then copy and paste for use when drafting papers for Court. And, if documents are needed from another person or entity, like a school or medical provider, we can rely on clients to do the work of collecting and scanning the documents to send our way. Each of these small actions add up to real savings in our time and, consequently, our client’s overall cost.
At the Floyd Law Firm, we never want someone to think that quality legal help is out of their reach, especially in today’s economic environment. We’ll work with you to find a way to afford our help without missing meals or housing payments. And, we’ve used all sorts of approaches: small initial payments with regular installment payments, pay-as-you-go arrangements, and, as I mentioned earlier, simple flat fees.
When it comes to family court, proper representation from the beginning is invaluable, so we offer you affordable options right from the start.
